She also had a younger brother named Albert Dunham jr. and they lived a middle class life. As a teenager her life became very sad and depressing with her mother's death, her father's remarriage, and with her father being a strict disciplinarian. When Katherine was six years old, she and her brother moved with their father and a new stepmother to Joliet, Illinois.
